Virosoft™ CP4 is a biological insecticide developed to help manage codling moth (Cydia pomonella) in pome fruits, tree nuts, and stone fruits, including apples, pears, walnuts, plums, and related crops. It is suitable for use in both commercial agriculture and residential production, and is approved for organic production.

The product contains Cydia pomonella granulovirus strain CpGV-CP4, a naturally occurring virus that must be ingested by larvae to be effective. After ingestion, the virus multiplies within the larval body, leading to infection and mortality. Because larvae quickly enter fruit, application timing is critical to ensure exposure before penetration.

Codling Moth

Codling moth is a major pest of apples and pears in North America and also affects tree nuts and stone fruits such as walnut, almond, plum, peach, nectarine, apricot, and cherry. Larvae bore into fruit and feed near the core, causing internal damage, premature drop, and unmarketable fruit, often identified by entry holes and reddish-brown frass. Eggs hatch within 6 - 14 days, after which larvae quickly enter fruit, making early intervention critical; pupation occurs under bark or in debris, with 2 - 3 generations per season. Even low infestations can result in significant economic loss. Monitoring should begin from bloom using pheromone traps, fruit inspection, and degree-day models. The most effective control occurs at or shortly after egg hatch, before larvae enter fruit. Early monitoring and timely application are critical for effective management.
